Spring break suitcase: The 5 packing essentials

It’s hard to believe that Spring Break is amongst us Miami students. As much as we regret eating late night pizza and trading gym time for Beat the Clock, spring break has finally reached us and we can take the much-needed break for rest and relaxation.

Regardless if you’re bikini-ready or not, the question on everyone’s mind is “What the hell do I pack?”

I am an avid over-packer, fueled by an anxiety of unknown activities and “what-ifs” when traveling. But after all the trips I’ve been on, I’ve slowly but surely trimmed down my over-stuffed suitcase and finally know the must-haves for spring break.

With this newfound knowledge, I decided I should share it with those who, like me, have to weigh their suitcase multiple times before boarding a plane.

With that being said, here are the 5 Spring Break Essentials so you can have fun in the sun and get rid of that extra baggage (literally).

1. Basics for Layering – No matter if you’re going to New York City or Punta Cana, simple and light basic pieces are a must to throw in your suitcase. Bringing featherweight t-shirts, tanks, and even sweaters guarantees you will have something to wear everyday, regardless of the weather. Basic pieces can be paired with anything and work for almost every occasion. Bonus points for light pieces because if you are in need of a cover up for the beach, simply throw on a sheer white tee or chambray button-down for a relaxed look that’s comfortable and hassle-free.

2. Sensible ShoesOne should always check the forecast for their travel destination before packing, but when it comes to shoes, knowing the weather is a necessity. If you are migrating south for spring break, the best shoes to pack are fashionable sandals. A pair of leather gladiator sandals with detailing, like gold studs or buckles, are perfect for beach-goers because they, similar to basic pieces of layering, can be dressed up or down. For those who are traveling to colder places, bringing short boots, like motorcycle boots or combat boots, are edgy yet practical for sightseeing.

3. An Abundance of Accessories – When traveling, it’s important to pack lightly and use pieces that can be worn in a multitude of different ways; this rule also applies to jewelry. A standard for traveling is to bring the jewelry you’re currently wearing, like dainty necklaces and post earrings. However, one should always bring a statement accessory, like a chunky necklace or cuff bracelet, because it adds spunk to any ensemble. Along with your favored jewelry pieces, other accessories to bring on your spring break getaway include lightweight printed scarves, a cross-body purse, a larger tote for beach days, and sturdy sunglasses, of course.

4. A Couple Party Outfits – One truly never knows what will come on spring break, but one thing all Miamians will take part in is a good party. Pack two to three dressier outfits for a night out on the town. This means a couple breezy, printed, or fancier dresses and tanks that can be amped up with your favorite pair of wedge heels. (I know us Miami girls love to wear heels every chance we get, but let’s be real, you’ll only need one pair of pumps for this trip and wedges are your best bet.) One must-have for a casual night on the town is a colorful maxi dress. Pair it with those wedges and you’ve got an outfit that’s easy yet sophisticated.

5. Weather-Appropriate Outerwear – As said before, check the weather forecast before your trip so you can properly prepare for the expected weather patterns. Appropriate outerwear is a must when traveling anywhere, so get to know the estimated temperatures and even possible storms before bringing that jean jacket. Two staples that always work is a casual jacket for the day and a leather jacket for the night.
