Some Like It Haute: 2014-2015 Featured Haute Couture Collections

This past week, held in Paris from July 6th to the 10th, marked the runway shows for fall and winter 2014-2015 Haute Couture Collections.

Both French and Italian designers populated Paris the last few days to showcase their Haute Couture collections, as seen with each runway filled with extravagant embroidered ensembles and sumptuous silhouettes.

Chanel – Has Karl Lagerfeld ever disappointed? I find it impossible. For the colder seasons, Lagerfeld had a mix of classic Chanel with a punk twist; tweed ensembles were accompanied by streamlined silhouettes covered in metallic embellishments, each piece featuring an array of adornments, such as gems, metal hardware, and feathers. The models sported flat sandals, some connected to thick black ribbons, and hair sat atop their heads, mimicking a punk-rock Mohawk.

Christian Dior – Dior Creative Director Raf Simons strikes again with his architectural pieces and a rewind into past designs. Retro influences meet present-day power woman with this show, as the beginning featured an homage to 1950’s hoop skirts and dresses, which transitioned to jumpsuits and pantsuits. Following that came structured coats, skirt suits, mini dresses, mini skirts, and floral dresses that swayed with each movement. Shoes were either simple black or colorful, like orange, royal blue, red, and even ombré designed pumps.

Zuhair Murad – Zuhair Murad is the go-to designer for a jaw-dropping, light-reflecting, shining, stunning, all around dazzling dress. Whether it’s one shoulder, strappy, or sleeveless, miniature or floor length, tight or loose, Murad has it all figured out. His princess-worthy pieces are practically made to be worn at award shows and he is a favorite amongst many celebrities and even royalty. From wedding dresses to crystal-covered mini skirts, Murad stuck to his diamond encrusted guns and went with his classic influence for a modern revival of his timeless design.

Giambattista Valli – If there’s one thing that screams summer flair, it’s a nice pair of sunnies. Giambattista Valli incorporated that, along with white head scarves, into each model’s ensemble for his latest 2014-2015 Haute couture collection. Stripes, floral, silk, and fur all made an appearance in this collection, as it speaks to a more glamorous, old-Hollywood vibe with its classic design and alluring appeal. And while this collection was intended for fall and winter, we can’t help but find our new summer hair inspiration – a clean white scarf with oversized, retro sunnies; simplicity has never been more fabulous.

Maison Martin Margiela – Love is in the air. And so are rhinestones, sequins, mermaid-like sheens and large gold buttons. The fashion house was visually aesthetic for the 2014-2015 Haute Couture runway, yet while many of the ensembles were overbearing with design and perfectly clashing, what really stole the show was the knee-high socks paired with eggshell colored mules. Oh yes, and how can we forget the fashion house’s hottest topic: the face mask. This time around, instead of bejeweled masks, a sheer face mask with delicate lace-like features adorned the model’s faces. (However, a few of those classic jeweled masks snuck into the catwalk towards the end.)
