UPdate your wardrobe: Vetements

By Abbey Gingras

Haven’t heard of Vetements? You’re not the only one. This up-and-coming clothing line was basically unheard of a year ago. Now Vogue‘s fearless leader Anna Wintour is just one of the many adoring fans who received a red rose as an invitation to the Paris Fashion Week show just a few days ago.

Set in the stunning American Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Paris, Vetements wowed guests who sat on pews to take in the show. This was a markedly more reserved setting than some of the previous show locations, like a rundown Chinese restaurant and a gaudy gay bar, which was designer Demna Gvasalia’s point.

The collection was remarkably (yet elegantly) simple most of the time and echoed a lot go Gvasalia’s previous work — androgynous styles, hoodies, plaid, and uniform-esque sets, to name a few. Many of these looks reflected the theme of fusion in UP‘s winter issue, proving that male and female styles don’t have to be separate.

To elevate your own wardrobe to Vetements-level chic, don’t be afraid to take on pieces from the opposite gender. Wearing unisex pieces like button downs, flannels, boyfriend jeans, jackets and blazers will add an edgy flair to your wardrobe. And with the winter weather hanging around for a few more weeks, now is your last chance to experiment with some new styles before you break out the florals for spring.

Now that Vetements is officially on the fashion map, we’ll have to wait and see what this brand does next with its new-found fame. We’re already counting down to the next show for further inspiration.
