Play it with Plaids!

By Pooja Ramchandani

What other motif can you say has been rockin’ it since the 18th century?

Plaids are a fashion piece that have started a segment of their own! They’ve become a fashion necessity and can be found in everyone’s wardrobes.

The best part? You can never go wrong with plaids. The criss cross pattern can always be paired with denims, khakis, solids, or can be incorporated into any clothing accessory you can think of!

However, many don’t know the different types of plaids that exist. Let me give you a sneek-peek into some of them.

First, there’s Tartan, the oldest one there is.

Tartan made its comeback in the F/W 2016 trends. This quirky trend goes perfect for a fall look. If you want to add some color to your wardrobe, incorporate subtle Tartans like a blanket scarf or the schoolgirl skirt to cheek up your look.

How to pair it up?

  • Dressy Tartans paired up with high tops or boots are a perfect casual look for going out on a fall weekend.
  • Make it more formal: wear a solid tee and pants paired up with a Tartan cape/duster and some oxfords/pumps.
  • Pair a Tartan shirt with ripped jeans or shorts and boat shoes for a casual summer look.

Second, there is Gingham.

Since Gingham roused back again in spring 2015 with Michael Kors, Oscar De la Renta, and Altuzarra, it never really left! The pretty, preppy, yet sophisticated check work has been so trendy since its appearance that it became Taylor Swift’s statement for a while.

How to pair it up?

  • Work your Gingham bodycon with bold lips and ankle-strap heels
  • Make it a formal evening by pairing up your Gingham maxi with strappy heels
  • Make a bold statement by pairing a Gingham blazer and a floral shirt with solid trousers or shorts and double Monk-straps.

Lastly, there is the Madras plaid.

The Madras plaid originated in India during the 60’s and had left a mark in the world of plaids once and for all. The cute “just gone to Nantucket” look can be worn as Bermuda shorts and Ties too!

How to pair it up?

  • Pair a Madras blouse with the same patterned trouser and pumps/sandals/ brogues to go bold.
  • A button up shirt with denim cut-offs and chukkas/ slippers for a casual dinner with friends.
  • Go partying with a slouchy boyfriend tee tied up with high waisted Madras shorts and some bold lips and accessories.

Plaids are versatile. Take some inspiration! Look out. Albeit you’ll see someone with plaids out there. Maybe creating a new trend? Maybe not. But if not, you may as well start your own!
