The Timeless Turtleneck

By Claire Vaughn

History repeats itself, and so does fashion. There’s no reason that perfectly good styles can’t be worn and reborn. We’ve seen this over again throughout the last decade. But even more recently, we have seen the rebirth of the angsty ’90s fashion. Chokers, velvet, flannel, combat boots—the whole shebang. But, what if other ’90s trends started coming up? The not-so-angsty, almost preppy trends? Well, guess what? They have!

One of these many trends is the turtleneck. Now, to be fair, turtlenecks were first worn in the 1860s by men polo players. But, in the 1920s they came into fashion for women, as they were seen as a sign of feminism. They eventually evolved into everyday life, hardcore feminist or not. Much of this can be attributed throughout the years to Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Jackie Kennedy, all three huge fashion icons who were well-known for wearing a plain black turtleneck.

The trend died down for a while, but reemerged in the 1990s as a staple for the characters of the hit series “Friends,” especially Rachel Green. Even variations have come about, such as tank top turtlenecks and different materials, like spandex and cashmere.

One really great idea for this fall-transition period is the tank top turtleneck. It’s perfect to pair with an army jacket for those chilly mornings but be able to take it off in the heat of the day.  The longer sleeved, very typical, turtlenecks can be worn on the chillier days and paired with boots.

Another great thing is that men haven’t been left out of this trend! As well as the women in the ’90s, the guys had their turn to get creative and delve into the world of turtlenecks. This look for guys is especially great when paired with some nice pants and loafers. Not only are these very sophisticated looking, but they are also very practical when it comes to cooler temps!

Try it out and experiment with different colors, textures, and patterns. And don’t forget about the world of layering! As long as you feel comfortable, you’ll exude confidence and sophistication!
