Dress Up Your Dorm Desk

By Nina Franco

Is your dorm room desk cluttered, unorganized, lacking originality, or just plain old boring? Seems like it’s not living up to its full potential.  Here are seven desk accessory must haves to get you motivated to study, remind you of home, and make you smile thinking about Oxford…

  1. Kate Spade New York: Things We Love ($21.15, Barnes & Noble)

A perfect coffee table book for your desk, something to look at when you’re bored and need a break from studying. Sometimes your phone isn’t the best option for a study break because you will stay hooked. Instead, you can flip through a couple pages of this book while gaining some fashion advice. If you don’t feel like shelling out twenty bucks for a new book,  substitute a couple of your favorites and stack them up.

  1. A Pencil Jar

Trust me, it is an essential item for your desk. That way there aren’t pens and pencils lying everywhere and whenever you’re looking for one it is easy to find. Simply use a mason jar, that way you can keep it simple or decorate it to your liking. A mug will also do, check out your local boutiques to find some cute ones.

  1. Goodies that remind you of home

TJ Maxx and Marshalls often sell mini wooden states, so choose your home state and put it on your desk as a reminder of where you came from. The cute mini states can also be found on Etsy, and are more customizable that way as well.

  1. A Jewelry Box

Small and simple, just a box for jewelry and knick knacks. I found my gold polka dot box at T.J. Maxx under the Cynthia Rowley collection. You could also try Etsy, Target, Forever 21, or even Urban Outfitters.

  1. Your Perfume or Cologne

Burberry Touch for me, maybe Ralph Lauren Blue for you? Whatever works for you. Most companies are making the bottles for these scents more and more interesting, so they are a decoration in themselves.

  1. Index Card Holder

Available at locak bookstores or even Kroger and Walmart, these functional holders are the perfect way to keep all your vocabulary words in order especially if you are in a language class.

  1. A Picture Frame

Whether it’s your best friend from home, your boyfriend, your family, your dog, or a picture of pizza, put them in a picture frame on your desk. It will encourage you to work harder or give you a piece of someone you’re missing.

Second semester is right around the corner, and it is time to get organized and start studying. I always find it easier to study when my desk is cleared and my room is clean. When your room is cluttered, it makes your life seem cluttered, so organizing your desk is one step in the right direction.
