A Time to Give Back

By Tori Levy

Thanksgiving is here, which means it’s time to indulge yourself in roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce, and the abundance of food that comes with the holiday. A time to sit down with family and friends after being separated apart by college, a job or just life. It’s a time to pay gratitude towards everything that seems to be going right in your life from warm shelter to the job promotion earned.

However, some people don’t have the luxury of going to a Thanksgiving dinner. A lot of the times we take the simple essentials in our lives for granted.  Some people are unable to provide food on the table, to buy new presents for their children at Christmas, or maybe are just alone for the holidays. This is where we can come in and help. There are plenty of ways to get involved within your community to help people in need this holiday. At a time where some of us have a lot to be thankful for, we also have the power to help struggling people find what they are grateful for.

Here are ten ways you can help out during the holiday season, which can either be done by donating your time or by donating goods.

  1. Volunteer at a soup kitchen
  2. Write thank-you cards to troops overseas
  3. Donate canned food to your local church or food pantry
  4. Visit a nursing home
  5. Donate clothes and household to your local Salvation Army
  6. Visit a hospital
  7. Ask people who are along for the holiday to join you at Thanksgiving
  8. Go out on Black Friday and buy toys to donate for Toys for Tots
  9. Volunteer at your local animal shelter or, better yet, foster an animal
  10. Spread kindness to others around you
