Best Sweater Looks of 2016

By: Allie Eames

As always, I wish my wardrobe was home to as many soft, cuddly, and warm sweaters that I could possibly fit into Minnich hall’s tiny closets. This season, a few of my favorite sweater styles include turtleneck, cropped, fair isle, lace-up and shaggy styles. I’ll include a few of my favorite styling examples and how you can create your own snuggly looks, to go from class to uptown in this winter.

Turtleneck styles are great because they stand out whether they are layered with cute jackets, tucked into skirts, swinging over leggings or jeans, or standing alone. They can be chunky or thin and are still guaranteed to keep you toasty.

The versatility of a cropped sweater also provides for many different styling opportunities. More form fitting looks work under jackets, chunky cardigans, or with high-waisted jeans or skirts. Oversized crops can hold their own and overpower an outfit in the best possible way. This look by House of Holland proves that an oversized crop can truly be mixed with anything. I love the boyfriend shirt’s formality with the graphic sweatshirt’s sportiness for an amazing casual-cute style. I’d love to see a football-inspired crop sweater over a mesh tee with leggings and sneakers for a gym interpretation as well.

Next, there’s the fair isle look. Formerly constrained to the New England prep style, fair isle has been coming in hot this season with a more contemporary and even bohemian emphasis.

Lace ups can doll up any oversized look and give a subtle embellishment to any colored sweater.

Lastly, the loop shag sweater is one of my favorite trends. It’ll make a statement and can be worn over a slip dress with boots or booties.

Hope this helps your winter season stay warm, fun, and especially trendy.
