Long Hair, Don’t Care

By Claire Vaughn

Everyone has their go-to hair style. Whether it’s a sleek braid or messy bun, people tend to have their comfort zones. The same goes for the cut of the hair. Usually, people who have had short hair for a while tend to continue to keep it short. The same goes for people with longer hair. Humans are creatures of habit and, therefore, tend to stick to the same style.

A few months ago, probably related to Kylie Jenner and Taylor Swift’s bit cuts, many girls chopped off their long locks and opted for a shorter-do. But now, the hair is beginning to grow out and girls are loving it!

Having long locks certainly has its benefits. For starters, it’s easier to put up and twist into cool, intricate braids. No bobby pins needed! Gym workouts aren’t bad, either. Throw the hair into a pony or a bun and be done! Another advantage? Cold weather sucks—leaving long hair down is like having a built-in scarf. As long as the hair is healthy, there is no reason to not have it longer if that’s what you want!

How does one grow it long and keep it healthy? First, don’t wash it everyday. It sounds gross, but sealing in those natural oils will really nourish the hair. Especially in the winter when the skin and scalp tends to be dry! So try to wash every other day or every three days if possible. Find a shampoo that works for you. I recommend the “Mane and Tail” shampoo. It smells clean and fresh and cleans the hair while moisturizing it, as well. In other words, no oil, no dry scalp. Plus, it is pretty inexpensive and can be found at pretty much every grocery or drug store.

Finally, use less heat. Straightening the hair or using other heat products daily will only cause breakage and split ends. Maybe try to limit heat on the hair to once a week. If you absolutely must use heat, use a heat protectant, also found at any drug store.
