New York Fashion Week 2017

By Nellie Given

Welcome to one of the most fashionable weeks of the year! New York Fashion Week is hot and happening right now. The week has just begun and so far there is an emerging trend that is nothing less than intense. Politics has woven its way into this year’s NY fashion week and, as yet, everyone is loving it.

The big shows this weekend were Calvin Klein and Jeremy Scott—excellent kickoffs.

Raf Simons, the very anticipated designer for Calvin Klein, focused on patriotism for his runway theme. The models strutted their stuff while David Bowie’s song, “This is Not America” serenaded the crowd. Scott gave his guests bandanas that said, “Unity, inclusion, hope, and acceptance: Join us at Calvin Klein in wearing the white bandana. #tiedtogether.”

Simons put together a show filled with suits of black and white with major pops of color underneath to represent the business side of America. Sporty America was represented with striped tube-sock sleeves, and the Western America was presented with denim jackets, loose jeans, and colorful cowboy-style shirts.

Jeremy Scott, who is known for his “fun” designs, held nothing back for his show. Scott told vogue, “We have to fight for everything we believe in. That’s the expression I wanted to use.” He bounced from prints with Jesus on them to the famous, “As Seen on TV” shirt. Not to mention, the runway was made completely of FUR! If that’s not a statement, then I don’t know what is.
