The Guide to Longer Hair

By Claire Vaughn

I am a victim of hair envy. Whenever I have long hair, I look at celebs and other girls who have cute bobs. So, I cut my hair. When I cut my hair, I look around and see girls with long hair and envy that. I don’t have the time or money to purchase and maintain any kind of extensions or wigs during these times. And I know that I am not the only person who feels this way. So, through my own personal trial and error, I have come up with the best ways to grow your hair longer, faster! Of course, everybody is different, and these tips may not work for everyone. But, in a desperate situation, these can’t hurt!

Reduce the heat! Everybody says this. But because it’s true! When one straightens, curls or even blow dries hair with heat, it damages the hair! This reduces shine and promotes frizz. This can cause split ends. As a result, the hair will look shorter than it is. And more than that, it can look unhealthy. But, you don’t have to quit cold turkey. Maybe reducing heat usage to once or twice a week at the most will help prevent split ends and heat damage. Besides this, it is best to use a heat protectant when you do use heat.  Even try a repair mask or only shampoo a few times a week.

Reduce the -poo! Showering every day is important. But remember that you don’t have to shampoo every time. In fact, it’s better if you don’t. Shampoo strips natural oils and proteins from the hair, drying it out and potentially reducing growth. Of course, this really all depends on your hair. Some people can get away with not shampooing for 3-5 days, while others go every other day. Find what works for you.

Drink more water! This is another one of those cliches that everyone says. But water does amazing things for your body. This includes your hair! Drinking enough water, about 8-10 glasses a day, can promote growth and maintain shine and thickness. When you lack hydration, your hair does too. It becomes dry and can lead to breakage and prevent growth. Besides, water is great for your skin and metabolism, too!

Vitamins are good! It is important to get all the vitamins and nutrition that you need. However, for many of us, we often don’t get as much nutrition as we need. When that happens, your hair, among other things can suffer. I would recommend taking some kind of supplement or biotin. My favorite is the Hair, Skin, and Nails by Nature’s Bounty. They can be found online or in any major retailers. They taste great and add shine and length!

My little secret! Finally, I must admit that I have my own little secret. For years, I have been using Mane and Tail Shampoo and conditioner. Actually, I started using it because I saw it in Seventeen Magazine Ad when I was younger and thought I would give it a try.  I must admit that it was the best decision I could’ve ever made for my hair. I swear it makes my hair grow so much faster than when I use other shampoos. I couldn’t tell you why, but I can say I have gotten many compliments on my hair once I started using it. It is perfect for thick or thin hair because it doesn’t leave any residue. It leaves it shinning and not greasy. Yes, it is also a horse shampoo. But, hey, horses tails are beautiful! If there were one thing that I would recommend about hair growth, it would be this product.

Overall, remember that everybody’s hair is different and unique. Be patient! One thing that I didn’t mention is that hair also needs time to grow. Some things can speed up the process, but recognize that your hair won’t grow a foot overnight.

However, knowing these tips and tricks can help speed up the process. Hopefully, you can now have more confidence to change up your hair and try new things!
