While browsing the dining hall options the other day, I couldn’t help but wonder, what options in fine dining does Oxford have to offer that doesn’t include stir-fry?

Sure, on-campus options are ideal for a poor underclassman, but when I’m really hankering for some good cooking, what are my best options? Starting on my quest, I asked as many of my peers as possible for their favorite bites uptown and beyond.

Just as good as it looks

To start your day off on the right foot, a must stop is Oxford Doughnut Shoppe. These homemade donuts are freshly fried every morning, Wednesday through Sunday, and revealed to the public at 6 a.m. They can only make so much, so get there fast because their policy is “Open ’till Sold Out.” And it’s worth the panic to get there that early.

Everything from yeast doughnuts to pastries, to apple fritters and cookies, are available. The extensive menu makes sure that you have many options for those pickier eaters. So if you want to begin your morning on a sweet note, drive down Locust Street and hit up this local favorite.

Heaven on earth

If you’re more of a brunch person above all else, your place of business must be Quarter Barrel. And if you haven’t heard of this magical place yet, I’ll give you one word that might ring a bell: Lavosh. Famous in Oxford for its variety and deliciousness, lavosh is a decently sized flatbread crust, smothered in an herb aioli and a tantalizing balsamic glaze.

For brunch, you can have the breakfast lavosh. This is the same base, but it comes with a vast spread of egg, potatoes, and cheddar cheese. My favorite lavosh, however, is the classic margarita, which is the regular base plus tomato, fresh basil, and mozzarella. A true art form.

Quarter Barrel has endless other options, including burgers, salads, and even mussels. But, if you want something that’ll satisfy you like nothing else, head over to East Collins for some tasty lavosh.

Aesthetically pleasing AND delicious

Another high point in Oxford fine dining: Sushi Nara. You must think I’m out of my mind to even utter the words of sushi and Oxford in the same sentence, but trust me it’s fantastic. Raw fish to stir-fry, the whole menu is a ten.

For a fun night out or just getting lunch with your friends, I recommend Nara. The price is affordable, and it’s somewhat homey because it dwells in an old campus house. Personal favorites are the spicy tuna and chicken lettuce wraps, but I’ve been challenged on that opinion. So if you’re adventurous or not, the menu is so widespread that you’ll have to find something to eventually like.

If you’ve been getting sick of stir fry from Maple Street Commons, Bosco sticks from Armstrong, or just need something to eat that isn’t pizza- here are a couple of my favorite options. I strongly recommend you venture the menus and find something you love because, at the end of the day, both your wallet and belly will be happy.
