The 70s Made Modern

By Abby Malone

This past fashion week, 70s trends were EVERYWHERE. Isabel Marant, Chloe, and Coach all incorporated retro-chic pieces into their collections. Flare jeans, big furs, and muted jewel tones blended in with more modern pieces like blazers and midi-length skirts and pants.

However, it can be challenging to apply these trends in real life. Designer pieces are pricey, and it sometimes can seem a little silly to spend tons of money on pieces that may not keep up with future trends. Luckily, 70s-esque pieces are everywhere in your favorite stores at the moment. All it takes is a little looking, but you can find some wondrous flare jeans and a fabulous faux fur coat without breaking the bank. I recommend looking at places like Nordstrom Rack and Saks off Fifth for high-quality pieces for crazy cheap.

If it seems a little daunting to put crazy colored bell-bottoms, start a little smaller with a relaxed pair of flare jeans. Flares are everywhere this season and are super comfortable to wear. Just wear them as you would normal jeans! They look amazing with both heels and sneakers, but extra fab with platforms. You can find flares just about anywhere you buy your jeans, from Free People to Target. Pair your new jeans with a cropped sweater (bonus points for bell sleeves!), and you’re good to go.

Jackets are my personal favorite item because they can turn a simple outfit into a showstopper. You can get sweet jackets for super cheap too- this leopard print one was $25 from Nordstrom Rack! Coats are so easy- invest in a couple cool ones in different prints and colors, and you always have a rad fall outfit ready to go.

Accessories can be kept to a minimum for this one- some cool round sunnies and heeled booties/cool sneakers are all you need. Let the rest of the outfit do the talking!

Hope this helps make your next outfit planning a little easier! Get creative with it and always make sure you feel confident and fabulous in your outfits.
