Movie review: Bohemian Rhapsody

By Jamie Santarella

I’ll be the first to admit that I am no expert on the band Queen or Freddie Mercury for that matter, but in my eyes, the recently released movie about the iconic band, Bohemian Rhapsody, is the love letter they deserve.

The first time I saw the trailer for this film in early October, I knew I needed to see the movie as soon as I could. This past Saturday I finally found time to take a break from my busy schedule and indulge in the story of one of my favorite bands and one of the most fascinating people.

Without giving too much away, the movie tells the story of the start of the band Queen, and more specifically the lead singer Freddie Mercury. It touches on the band’s friendship, struggles with each other and within the music industry, plus Freddie’s sexuality and diagnosis with HIV/AIDS, all while giving us a taste of how some of their hit songs were made.

I left the theater crying. I was so moved by the story and the performances of the cast. You could tell the entire cast and crew worked very hard to do these legends justice, especially Rami Malek, the actor that plays Freddie. As a big fan of their music, I thought it was the perfect tribute to the songs we know and love, and their impact on their fans and the music industry.

It’s the perfect reminder of how Queen, Freddie Mercury, and their music are timeless.
